The red cloth comes from Hainsworths mill in Yorkshire which was founded in 1783 and is still used in the uniform of the Guards and other British Army Regiments. The red tartan is the Royal house of Stewart tartan which dates back to the 11th century. The darker tartan is the Stewart hunting tartan. We try to find meaningful material for our products and the material itself adds a new dimension to some fairly mundane items. Alongside our metal and wood we are adding leather. Leather from significant sources such as card cases using the leather from Soviet cold war era flying jackets and leather from WW2 era American flying jackets. You might describe the wood as sub-fossilized and it seems older than our bog oak knives which are around ten thousand years old. We only have six of them and that’s it - the wood was a chance find and except for a few pocket knives which we have made and that’s the end of it.
